Shetland featured in Lonely Planet’s Best in Europe list 2019

Shetland is the only UK destination featured in an influential travel list for 2019.

Lonely Planet has just unveiled its Best in Europe list for 2019. The top spot was taken by the High Tatras in Slovakia.

Shetland, a Scottish island off the British mainland is the UK’s most northern point, took sixth place with Lonely Planet mentioning the island’s famous Up Helly Aa festival that celebrates the island’s viking past.

Other notable destinations to make the influential travel list include the Spanish City of Madrid in second (pictured), and Lyon, France (7th place).

Madrid is praised for its excellent nightlife and changes implemented to make the city more pedestrian and cycling-friendly.

The famous High Tatras of Slovakia took the top spot, chosen by travel experts,  with Lonely Planet praising the region’s abundance of wildlife and quality as a hiking destination.
